The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (“L’apprenti sorcier”), written in 1897, is by far the most famous work of composer Paul Dukas. Based on a poem of the same name by Goethe, it tells the story of an apprentice wizard who is left to look after his master’s workshop with disastrous consequences. Its use in Walt Disney’s 1940 animation Fantasia led to it becoming one of the most widely and best-loved works in the orchestral repertoire.
